Holly, Bollywood Join Tollywood fight

Saturday, March 20, 2010

Hollywood and Bollywood linked arms Thursday to fight piracy, with the announcement of a coalition among the Motion Picture Association of America and seven Indian companies to tackle counterfeiting in one of the world's largest film markets. The alliance comes as Hollywood tries to tap global markets more aggressively and as Indian movie studios grow in size and stature - narrowing the gap between Indian and U.S. filmmakers, who have not always seen eye-to-eye on intellectual property issues. A year in the making, the coalition to fight film piracy in India will work with movie theaters to crack down on camcorder piracy - the source of 90 percent of all pirated DVDs with police to tighten enforcement, with Internet service providers to fight Internet piracy and with politicians to create more effective laws.

It's a known news that Film producer Yalamanchi Ravichand's fast-unto-death over the piracy issue has entered the fourth day on Thursday and many of the leading film personalities have joined his protest outside the Andhra Pradesh Film Chamber of Commerce office in Film Nagar, Hyderabad. "In one year the Telugu film industry does a business of over 500 crores But around 200 crore business loss is incurred by us due to piracy. This is a problem with both small and big budget films. Thus we want to avoid piracy. If the Piracy Act is enforced then we can control this menace. That is why I am protesting," said Ravichand. He further said that the state government must act on the piracy issue before the upcoming season from April to June, which traditionally sees the release of more films.

Let's wish all the best for all the people involved/trying to fight the piracy devil!
